Jay Williams, cohead of William Morris Endeavor’s (WME's) Nashville office, must decide how to respond to an incident involving Morgan Wallen, one of the talent agency’s fastest-rising country music stars. Wallen, a white singer, was caught on home security footage using a serious racial slur with a group of white friends after a night of drinking. The following day, the footage was released to the public, and Wallen was swiftly disavowed by his record company, the two largest country music institutions, and hundreds of country radio stations. Williams faced pressure from executives whose Black A-list clients were lobbying the agency to drop the enormously popular Wallen from the WME client roster. Additionally, Williams had to consider the fact that Austin Neal, Wallen’s highly successful and well-connected agent, might leave WME if Wallen was forced out. This A case outlines this dilemma, while the B and C cases present the decision, as well as further complications and the eventual outcome for both the agency and Wallen.
