University of Virginia (UVA) Health has seen strong financial health and sustained growth in recent years, and has just hired promising new leadership. But in early 2020, the COVID-19 crisis hit with little time to prepare and resulted in immediate and significant financial losses across the organization. Now, with looming losses, J. Corey Feist, CEO of the University Physicians Group (UPG) at the UVA Health System, must help develop a financial mitigation strategy. In January the prospects for growth and expansion were good, and now survival seems to be at stake. What are the primary goals for a turnaround plan? What principles need to be followed? This case, which has been taught successfully online at Darden, addresses factors to consider in financial mitigation plans, including incremental efforts, cuts announced elsewhere in the university, key performance indicators, effects on different groups of employees, and how to communicate the plans.
